The city has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, with a flourishing food scene, lively nightlife, and a growing reputation as one of Europe's most underrated cultural destinations. Whether you are drawn to its rich archaeological heritage, its leafy parks, or its welcoming cafe culture, Sofia will leave a lasting impression on every visitor.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral stands as one of the most iconic landmarks in all of the Balkans and is a must-see for any visitor to Sofia. This magnificent neo-Byzantine cathedral, with its gleaming gold-plated dome rising 45 metres above the city, was built between 1882 and 1912 as a memorial to the 200,000 Russian soldiers who died fighting for Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. The cathedral can accommodate up to 5,000 worshippers, making it one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches in the world. Its interior is equally breathtaking, decorated with Italian marble, Brazilian onyx, alabaster, and elaborate mosaics and murals created by artists from Russia, Bulgaria, and across Europe. The crypt beneath the cathedral houses one of the finest collections of Orthodox icons in Southeastern Europe, with pieces spanning from the 9th to the 19th centuries. The cathedral square itself is a popular gathering place and hosts a vibrant open-air market where local artisans sell antiques, old books, and handcrafted jewellery. Boyana Church (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Situated at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the quiet residential suburb of Boyana, this unassuming medieval church is home to one of the most remarkable collections of medieval frescoes in all of Europe. The Boyana Church, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, consists of three buildings constructed during the 10th, 13th, and 19th centuries. The second phase of frescoes, painted in 1259, is what makes this site truly extraordinary: the 240 figures depicted on the walls display a naturalism and emotional depth that predates the Italian Renaissance by nearly a century, leading many art historians to regard them as among the most important achievements of European medieval art. The frescoes portray 89 different scenes and are celebrated for their vivid colours, realistic expressions, and remarkable state of preservation. Due to their fragile nature, only small groups of visitors are admitted at a time, and visits are limited to 15 minutes, so advance booking is highly recommended. The surrounding park and gardens provide a tranquil setting for a leisurely walk before or after your visit. Learn more about Boyana Church

Saint George Rotunda

Hidden in the courtyard of the Presidency building and surrounded by the remains of the ancient Roman city of Serdica, the Church of St. George is the oldest preserved building in Sofia and one of the oldest surviving churches in the entire Balkan Peninsula. This small cylindrical red-brick church was originally built by the Romans in the early 4th century AD and has served variously as a baptistery, a mosque during the Ottoman period, and finally restored as a church. The interior features three layers of frescoes spanning nearly a millennium, with the earliest dating back to the 10th century and the most celebrated being the 12th-century depictions of 22 prophets arranged in a dome composition that is considered a masterpiece of medieval Bulgarian art. The surrounding archaeological excavations reveal the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Serdica, including streets, public buildings, and early Christian mosaics that provide a vivid window into the city's layered past. Visiting this site gives you the remarkable experience of standing in a 1,700-year-old building in the very heart of a modern European capital. Learn more about Saint George Rotunda

National Palace of Culture (NDK)

The National Palace of Culture, known locally as NDK (Natsionalen Dvorets na Kulturata), is the largest multifunctional conference and exhibition centre in Southeastern Europe. Opened in 1981 to mark the 1,300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state, this modernist architectural landmark comprises eight floors above ground and three underground levels, housing 13 halls with a total capacity of over 8,000 seats. The building hosts a wide range of events throughout the year, including international congresses, concerts by world-renowned artists, film premieres, and art exhibitions. The surrounding Borisova Gradina-adjacent park, known as NDK Park or South Park, has been beautifully landscaped with fountains, sculptures, and tree-lined walkways, making it one of the most popular green spaces in central Sofia. On warm evenings, locals flock to the park's many outdoor cafes and restaurants to enjoy the pleasant atmosphere. The wide boulevard leading to NDK offers panoramic views of Vitosha Mountain, creating one of the most distinctive urban landscapes in the capital. Learn more about the National Palace of Culture

Ivan Vazov National Theatre

Named after the great Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov, the National Theatre is Bulgaria's oldest and most authoritative theatre, and its grand Neo-Classical facade is one of the most photographed buildings in Sofia. Designed by the famous Viennese architectural firm Fellner & Helmer and inaugurated in 1907, the theatre was nearly destroyed by a fire in 1923 but was meticulously restored and rebuilt in 1929, preserving its original elegant design with a colonnaded portico, ornate reliefs, and a sweeping grand staircase. Set in the picturesque City Garden park, surrounded by fountains and mature trees, the theatre provides a stunning backdrop for an evening stroll or a daytime coffee at one of the neighbouring garden cafes. The theatre regularly stages performances of classic Bulgarian and international drama, opera, and ballet, and attending a show here is a wonderful way to experience Bulgarian culture firsthand. The City Garden itself, dating back to 1878, is Sofia's oldest public park and a beloved meeting point for locals of all ages. Learn more about Ivan Vazov National Theatre

Vitosha Mountain

Vitosha Mountain is one of the symbols of Sofia and one of the greatest natural assets of any European capital city. Rising to 2,290 metres at its highest peak, Cherni Vrah (Black Peak), Vitosha is the oldest nature park in the Balkans, established in 1934, and offers a stunning natural escape just 30 minutes from the city centre. The mountain is crisscrossed with well-marked hiking trails that range from gentle walks through old-growth beech and spruce forests to challenging alpine routes above the tree line, with spectacular panoramic views of Sofia and the surrounding valleys. In winter, the Aleko ski area provides downhill and cross-country skiing facilities, while in summer, the same slopes transform into meadows carpeted with wildflowers, ideal for picnicking and nature photography. One of the most distinctive features of Vitosha is the Golden Bridges area, where a remarkable "stone river" of enormous morraine boulders stretches along a valley, creating a surreal geological landscape unlike anything else in Europe. Whether you are seeking a vigorous mountain hike, a relaxing nature walk, or simply panoramic views with a mountain-hut lunch, Vitosha has something for everyone. Learn more about Vitosha Mountain

Central Mineral Baths & Sofia History Museum

One of the most striking buildings in Sofia, the Central Mineral Baths building is a remarkable example of early 20th-century architecture combining Viennese Secession, Neo-Byzantine, and Bulgarian National Revival styles. Built between 1911 and 1913 by architect Petko Momchilov, its colourful ceramic decorations, grand symmetrical facade, and ornate dome make it an unmissable landmark in the city centre. The building originally served as a public bathhouse, taking advantage of Sofia's naturally heated mineral springs, which have been used since Roman times and still flow freely from the public fountains outside, where locals regularly fill bottles with the warm mineral water. After extensive renovation, the building now houses the Sofia History Museum, which chronicles the development of the city from antiquity to the present day through a rich collection of artefacts, photographs, and interactive displays. The square in front of the baths, known as Banski Square, is a lively gathering spot and a great place to sample the mineral water yourself, watch the passing trams, and take in the architectural beauty of one of Sofia's most beloved buildings.
